The Carthage Service League has opened applications for its Second Opportunity Scholarship, geared towards those planning to return to school after not attending for at least two years.
According to the Service League, $10,000 will be awarded for two years of study at Panola College, covering tuition, fees, books and required supplies. The application deadline is April 15.
The only requirements scholarship candidates must meet are graduating high school or a State of Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency (GED), two years since attending school, and residency in Panola County. Potential recipients must submit a copy of their high school and/or college transcripts and a completed scholarship application with an essay and references by April 15 to the Sammy Brown Library.
Applications can be picked up at the Thrift Shop at 113 E. Panola, Carthage, and the Sammy Brown Library at 319 S. Market, Carthage. The essay portion prompts candidates to share “plans for the future” and/or “reasons for re-enrolling in school.”
A “need” was felt in the community for a scholarship specifically for those returning to school, according to Carthage Service League Chair, Deanna Jones.
Jones explains, “This is open to all residents of Panola County who have spent time away from school and seeking to return. Mothers, fathers, young and old, anyone is welcome to apply.”
With mostly earnings from the Thrift Store, the scholarship is offered as a way for the Service League to give back to community members directly. Announcement of the recipient will be made in May.
“While so many scholarships are available to students straight out of high school, we just wanted to give an opportunity to those seeking to grow their lives by returning to education. Whether it be for a degree or certification, we encourage anyone who is interested and meets the requirements to apply,” says Jones.
