What Is the Ontario Graduate Scholarship?
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship is a merit-based funding initiative jointly offered by the Government of Ontario and participating universities. It supports full-time Master’s and Doctoral students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and strong research potential.
According to programme details, “The Province of Ontario provides two-thirds of the award value, while the participating university covers the remaining one-third.” This collaborative model aims to promote research excellence and foster talent across Ontario’s top higher learning institutions.
The award amount depends on the number of consecutive terms a student is enrolled in during the academic year:
CAD 10,000 (approx. ZAR 135,000 / USD 7,300) for 2 consecutive terms
CAD 15,000 (approx. ZAR 202,000 / USD 11,000) for 3 consecutive terms
The maximum duration a student can receive OGS funding is:
2 academic years for Master’s students
4 academic years for Doctoral students
However, there is a lifetime limit of 6 years of OGS funding across all graduate studies.
To qualify, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Be enrolled (or plan to enrol) full-time in a Master’s or Doctoral programme
Be registered at one of the OGS-participating universities in Ontario
Ensure the chosen programme lasts at least two academic terms (21–52 weeks)
You must apply through one of the following institutions:
Brock University
Carleton University
University of Guelph
Lakehead University
Laurentian University
McMaster University
Nipissing University
OCAD University
Ontario Tech University
University of Ottawa
Queen’s University
Toronto Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson)
University of Toronto
Trent University
University of Waterloo
Western University
Wilfrid Laurier University
University of Windsor
York University
Applicants must prepare the following materials:
Completed OGS Application Form (university-specific)
Academic transcripts
Statement of intent
Research proposal
Two academic references
Proof of citizenship or residency
List of previous awards and publications
CV or resume
Unlike many other scholarships, there is no centralised application for the OGS. Instead:
“You must submit an OGS application directly to the university where you intend to study. Each school has its own version of the application and unique submission procedures.”
If you’re applying to multiple universities, be prepared to fill out separate OGS applications for each one. Forms are usually made available from October onwards.
For specific deadlines and requirements, consult the Graduate Studies Office of your preferred institution.
There is no universal deadline for the OGS. Each university and graduate programme sets its own deadline. Therefore, it is crucial that applicants check with their chosen university well in advance to avoid missing the cut-off.
This scholarship significantly reduces the financial burden on students, allowing them to focus on their academic and research goals.
As stated in the official description, “Winning an OGS provides financial support, helping students focus on their studies without money worries. Since the competition is tough, earning this scholarship is a mark of high achievement.”
