The Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan, administered by the Treasurer of State’s office, has reached $1.5 billion in assets. Reaching this milestone shows that families value having an easy solution for education savings and financial planning.
Currently, the Brighter Future 529 Plan has 54,695 individual 529 accounts, with more than half of them being Arkansas residents. These numbers demonstrate that Arkansans continue to prioritize education for themselves and their loved ones.
“When I was elected treasurer, my top priority was making sure Arkansans had the best resources to help ensure their investments stay secure, and that includes saving for future educational endeavors,” said Treasurer of State John Thurston. “As we celebrate this achievement, we remain steadfast in the success and growth of the Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan.”
The Brighter Future 529 Plan is a tax-advantaged savings account designed to help beneficiaries achieve their educational goals. Arkansans with a 529 account may use the funds generated to help pay for tuition, books and housing at two- and four-year colleges or universities in the United States and abroad.
The savings can also help cover trade or technical school education and student loan payments. Earnings are tax-deferred, and withdrawals are tax-free, which can mean more money for educational pursuits.
“We are thrilled to see the continued investments of Arkansans as they pursue success through higher education,” said Acting Director of 529 Programs Chris Scott. “A 529 account is a great way to invest in yourself and your loved ones for the future.”
The Arkansas Brighter Future 529 Plan began in 1999. It became the responsibility of the Treasurer’s Office in 2003. While initially a direct-sold plan sponsored by the state, the plan’s advisory board opened it up for financial advisors to sell as well in 2007.
