It’s the time of year that graduating high-school students receive, and give thanks for, college scholarships.
But behind every scholarship award is a group of people who promote and evaluate applications.
The Kiwanis Club of Arlington recently honored Tracy Miller for her service on the club’s scholarship committee.
“It’s always a joy to see you and see your work,” said club president Linda Chandler, surprising Miller (executive director of YMCA of Greater Washington) with an award at the club’s June 12 meeting.
Also at that meeting, held at Marymount University, a scholarship was presented to Sara Ahmad, a Washington-Liberty High school senior who is headed to Georgetown University to study computer science.
At Washington-Liberty, Ahmad was a member of the Key Club, a leadership organization sponsored by Kiwanis International. Next year, she will be one of three siblings enrolled in college – all computer-science majors.
Also receiving a scholarship was Jazmin Diaz Menjivar, a graduating senior at the Arlington Career Center, first-in-her-family college student and a young mother. She has entrepreneurial aspirations, including owning her own real-estate business and/or salon.
Also at the June 12 meeting, the Kiwanis Club of Arlington honored member Edd Nolen for his longtime service to the Yorktown High School Key Club.
“You don’t know the work that goes into supporting our Key Clubs,” said Tom Parker, who presented the award.
In accepting it, Nolen noted that the Yorktown Club was somewhat unique and did things its own way.
But the results, he said, spoke for themselves.
“They do a lot of service in the community,” Nolen said.
