The Arlington Rotary Club recently bestowed two college scholarships and named Anne Eisman, a third-grade teacher at Escuela Key Elementary School, as its Educator of the Year.
Over her decades-long career, Eisman has emphasized the importance of early-childhood literacy and has instilled the joy of reading in her students, the organization noted in announcing its selection.
“More than anything, we want to underscore the important impact Arlington educators make on our community and improve college access to those with limited opportunities,” said Tony Weaver, who chairs the Arlington Rotary Educational Foundation.
“Unfortunately, financial barriers are a major roadblock to attending college for many students in Arlington, particularly for communities of color. We want to do everything we can to help alleviate these barriers” Weaver said.
Idalia Villatoro Molina, a recent graduate of Arlington Community High School, received the Club’s $8,000 Audra Rafter scholarship and plans to attend Northern Virginia Community College.
Molina attended Arlington Community High School while working full-time. While attending high school, she had the opportunity to student-teach, and plans to study early-childhood development at the collegiate level.
Melat Mulugeta, the club’s $10,000 at-large scholarship recipient, attended Yorktown High School and is considering attending George Mason University with the intention of studying business and economics. During her time as a student at Yorktown, Mulugeta was active in the Key Club and assisted other students as a math tutor.
“We hope that future scholarships can give students, who would not otherwise be able to financially afford college, the opportunity to continue their education and expand their career opportunities,” Weaver said.
