Dozens of artworks in various shapes, colors and sizes created by budding young artists are now lining the walls of the Amarillo Museum of Art as part of the Texas Panhandle Student Art Show.
The exhibit is on display May 3-16 at the museum, located at 2200 South Van Buren on the Washington Street campus of Amarillo College.
The show is an opportunity for students to exhibit and compete in the area of visual art. Elementary artwork was encouraged for exhibition; however, awards are only eligible for secondary art students.
Participating schools include Palo Duro High School, Caprock High School, Tascosa High School, Amarillo High School, Canyon High School, Randall High School, Shamrock High School, Gruver High School, GW Carver Academy, Olsen Park Elementary, Travis 6th Middle School, De Zavala Middle School, Fannin Middle School, Bowie Middle School, Crockett Middle School, Austin Middle School, and Shamrock Junior High.
A closing reception on Friday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the museum will honor award winners and participants.
Senior portfolios were hung by participating students and will be judged for eligible scholarships. Artwork will be judged for 10 Individual Best of Show Awards and a Best of Show Portfolio, with each winner receiving an honorarium from the Amarillo ISD Arts Department.
The Education Credit Union also sponsors two Georgia O’Keeffe Excellence in Art & Creativity Awards, for one middle school and one high school student. ECU will also award a scholarship to one senior portfolio student.
The Texas Panhandle Art Education Association will also present awards.
Amarillo College and West Texas A&M University will award scholarships based on portfolio review and interviews conducted during Scholarship Night.
