Associated Students has opened their scholarship applications at Cal State Fullerton, offering 13 distinct scholarships with each providing $1,000. Spring 2025 ASI scholarship applications are open for all students until March 11.
Susan Collins, assistant director of Corporate Affairs for ASI, said ASI has been offering scholarships since the early ‘90s, providing opportunities in both the fall and spring semesters to support as many students as possible. Although many of the same scholarships are offered every semester, the criteria evolves based on the current needs of the student body.
“Students over time have elected to offer scholarships, such as the formerly incarcerated student scholarship, the international student scholarship, the adult re-entry, graduate students and student-parents scholarships,” Collins said. “Those are some of the scholarships that students in the past said, we want to do this to support students attending Cal State Fullerton.”
Scholarship opportunities such as the formerly incarcerated and student-parent scholarships are offered to provide students in unique situations the assistance they may need in pursuing their educational goals.
“I have seen some comments from past — especially in our student parents — students have said, you know, ‘I’m a working parent attending higher education, working on my degree and even that $1000 scholarship just helped to offset some of the expense for my family,’” Collins said.
With a number of different scholarships available, students should carefully evaluate which ones they can apply for and ensure that they meet basic eligibility requirements such as GPA and campus involvement.
According to Collins, scholarships such as the Harvey Mckee Student Leadership Scholarship and the Milton A. Gordon Scholarship came about because of the contributions of past CSUF administrations and offer valuable support for students to take advantage of by thoroughly completing applications and meeting necessary criteria.
“You’re here on campus, you have financial responsibilities, you have needs, it’s free money available to you, take advantage. It’s to your benefit,” Collins said. “And if you don’t get it this time, that’s okay because there are limited resources, let’s be honest, we wish we had, you know, a thousand dollars for every student on campus, but we don’t so we do the best that we can to support the needs for our students.”
ASI chooses scholarship recipients by having a panel of student leaders and the ASI Board of Directors grade scholarship essays anonymously to establish fairness in the selection process.
This anonymous grading system is meant to help maintain objectivity and ensure that the most deserving candidates are recognized and awarded based on their application.
Christina Cardenas, director of Organizational Communications and Outreach of ASI, said that many students are still not aware of the dozens of scholarships available every semester. ASI aims to make more students aware of these opportunities and works towards allocating resources to provide as much support to the student body as possible.
Anthony Carpio, fourth-year business administration major, said he has never applied to a scholarship before due to feeling like he would not be selected, but would encourage others to apply.
“Looking back, I really should have taken advantage of the scholarship opportunities here at school, but I just assumed that so many people were applying that the chances of being selected would be low,” Carpio said. “[…] My first piece of advice would be just to really figure out the scholarships that are meant for you and how you could plan to really attain them.”
ASI is working on collaborating with the campus scholarship club to create a one-stop shop where every student will have the opportunity to apply for scholarships through one portal. This collaboration will aim to streamline the application process and offer more opportunities to students, Collins said.
“Our goal is hopefully to expand and enhance and provide more opportunities for students,” Collins said. “We are here for the students, and that’s our goal is to really find ways to do more for our students.”
