The Mary Ellen Hillgren Memorial Scholarships, administered by Assistance League of Flintridge, have been awarded to Ava Anderson and Lauren Kim of the La Cañada High School Class of 2025.
The scholarship was established by the Hillgren family in 1995 to honor their mother, a prominent and dedicated member of the La Cañada Flintridge community, who had been President of National Assistance League as well as President of the Flintridge chapter.
Mary Ellen Hillgren believed in public education and encouraged students to excel not only in academics, but also in sports and community service.
Anderson was a stellar student and AP scholar at La Cañada High. She also excelled in business classes at Pasadena City College and Glendale Community College. She is an award-winning photographer and raised over $5,000 for art supplies while providing 200 art kits to Union Rescue Mission and Hope Gardens as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award. A Red Cross certified lifeguard, Anderson is a swim coach and has also played on the LCHS volleyball and golf teams. Ava’s Closet, the eBay thrift store which she developed to promote sustainability, has made over 800 unit sales with 100% positive reviews. Ava will attend the University of California, San Diego.
Kim is a cancer crusader and has spoken at the White House and at Stanford University School of Medicine about gastric cancer awareness, for which she has created a documentary. She has interned at City of Hope, and formed a high school club, Sending Out Love, to support youth struggling with physical or mental health. Active in student government, Kim served as 12th grade class president. She attended many city events as Queen of the 2024 Miss La Cañada Flintridge Royal Court. Kim was the tennis doubles MVP at LCHS, where she has an A average. She plans to attend the University of Southern California in the fall.
