INDIANA, Pa. — The Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug & Alcohol Commission is pleased to announce the Clarion County winner for the 2024 Bernie Smith Memorial Scholarship is Grace Barlett, a senior at Allegheny-Clarion Valley High School. Grace was chosen for exemplifying the mission of the Armstrong-Indiana-Clarion Drug and Alcohol Commission by way of her involvement, leadership, and accomplishments throughout her high school career.
Since 2023, Grace has served as a Youth Representative for the Clarion Drug Free Coalition (CDFC) where she provided a youth perspective at monthly meetings regarding events for high school students and youth of the community. Through her involvement, she has gained further insight into the alcohol, tobacco, and drug prevention efforts and resources in Clarion County.
Grace is also a member of the Emlenton Echoes 4-H Club and has participated in several community service activities and many of her 4-H projects have placed first at both the local and state level. Grace has served as a District Representative at monthly meetings for Students for Education in Pennsylvania (SEPA) where she provides a student perspective on how current educational policies impact students and propose ideas and input on new policies. During the summer of 2021, Grace conducted an investigation project of the prevalence of Ophryocystis electroscirrha in monarch butterflies.
Grace’s school activities include earning the rank of No. 1 in a class of 53 in the senior class of 2024, serving as the Get Involved and Value Everyone (GIVE) Club President for four years, volunteered as a coach to assist the A-C Valley Girls’ basketball program, served as the A-C Valley School Board Student Representative through grades 10-12, served as a Class Secretary in grade 10, Class President in grade 11, and Class Vice President in grade 12, and played on the A-C Valley Girls’ Varsity/Junior Varsity Basketball team in grades 9 and 10.
Other activities include: Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences, Brown University Pre-College Program, Project Monarch Health, Monarch Watch Tagging Program, and the Rising Stars AAU Basketball team.
Grace is the daughter of Erin Barlett and Earl Barlett and plans to attend Brown University in the fall.
