WEIRTON — For the seventh year, Basil’s Sports Bar and Grill is investing in the future of some local student athletes.
Thursday afternoon, owner Pete Basil presented scholarships to two graduating high school seniors, as part of what has become a tradition for the Weirton-based restaurant.
“We’ve been here since 2014, and two years later we started the scholarship,” Basil explained.
A plaque displayed in the Dugout area of Basil’s shows the recipients of each year’s scholarships, beginning in 2019. This year, Brooke High’s Evan Urso and Steubenville’s Amelia Collopy joined the roster.
Each received $1,000 to put toward college, as well as a certificate.
Basil noted there were close to 65 applications submitted from 10 area high schools for the scholarship, which is awarded to one male and one female senior student from Hancock or Brooke counties in West Virginia, or Jefferson County in Ohio.
The main requirements to apply for the scholarship are for the student to have played sports in high school and plan to attend college. There also is an essay component to the application, where students are asked to discuss how sports have affected their lives.
Urso is a multi-sport athlete for Brooke, having played both soccer and basketball. He plans to attend West Virginia University.
Collopy has played soccer for Steubenville, and plans to attend the University of Cincinnati.
“We’re delighted we’re able to do this every year,” Basil said, adding the scholarship is a way for the business to show support for the community which has supported them over the years.
Basil claimed the scholarship is funded through a percentage of each hot dog sold at Basil’s.
The scholarship recipients and their families were treated to a meal of pasta, meatballs and salad during the presentation Thursday.
