It’s been quite the past couple weeks for 1,000-point scorers. Plenty have hit the milestone in January and we’ll highlight those that have among the others that have already hit the mark.
Some program records were set, whether career or single-game along with some impressive stat lines in games.
Here’s the latest edition of Basketball Bites.
Griffen Derry 1,000 points
Dixie Heights senior Griffen Derry recently hit the 1,000 point milestone for his career, doing so in the Colonels 70-42 victory over Franklin County on Jan. 25.
Derry leads the Colonels in scoring this season with 18 points per game and is a deadly 3-point shooter, hitting 55% of his attempts this season.
Garyn Jackson 1,000 points
Campbell County senior Garyn Jackson hit the 1,000 point mark for his career in the Camels 69-36 victory over Harrison County.
The senior continues to inch closer to rare territory with over 1,000 points, 500 assists and 500 rebounds. He needs just 13 more rebounds to hit all three marks.
Jayden McClain near triple-double

Ryle eighth grader Jayden McClain had quite the weekend in a win over DuPont Manual and a loss to Sacred Heart at the Raatz Fence/O’Sheas Classic.

In the win over Manual, McClain had six points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. In the loss to Sacred Heart, she just missed a triple-double with 15 points, nine rebounds and 10 blocked shots.
Zoee for three

Bishop Brossart senior Zoee Meyers recently set the single-game record for most 3-pointers in a game. Meyers accomplished the feat in the Lady ‘Stangs All “A” state tournament semifinal contest with Bethlehem on Jan. 25.
Meyers knocked down seven 3-pointers, hitting on 7-of-12 attempts.
Schulz, Baker, Stone 1,000 points
The Heritage Academy trio of Elisha Schulz, Cameron Baker and Trent Stone all hit the 1,000 point plateau recently.
Baker hit the mark on Jan. 2 in a 90-68 victory over Bellevue, Schulz did it on Jan. 4 in a 63-41 win over Louisville Collegiate and Stone accomplished the feat on Jan. 25 in a 51-36 victory over Whitefield Academy.
Heritage Academy is off to a 14-4 start to the season.
Massey Bellevue’s all-time 3-point leader

Bellevue’s Sydni Massey became the program’s all-time 3-point leader in their Jan. 23 victory over Ludlow.
Massey has knocked down 169 three-pointers in her high school career.
Ray Gabbard Scholarship
The Ray Gabbard Scholarship Committee recently announced that they’ll again be awarding an annual scholarship to one male and female team member of any 9th Region basketball team.
The scholarship will be for $2,500 for each gender. The scholarship is for seniors only, including any trainer, manager or statistician. Information has been handed out to the coaches in the 9th Region which includes the requirements, deadlines and expectations.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 9 and will be awarded out during the 9th Region tournaments at NKU.

Former 33rd District foes go head-to-head again
When Evansville and Belmont met on Jan. 24 in an NCAA women’s basketball game, it also brought the Cooper-Ryle girls basketball rivalry with it.
Freshman Quinn Eubank, who is a freshman at Belmont and a Ryle grad went up against Evansville freshman Logan Palmer, a Cooper grad.
Belmont got the best of Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference matchup with a 90-65 victory. Eubank had six points, four rebounds and an assist in 15 minutes of action while Palmer had seven points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal in 21 minutes.
The six points were a season-high for Eubank. Palmer, who has been limited to 11 games due to injury, is averaging 5.9 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in those contests.

Ryle senior Jonathan DeGroff recently set the single-game blocks record with nine in the Raiders contest with Conner on Jan. 24.
Get to NKU Sunday

A tripleheader for the City BBQ Classic will take place on Sunday at Northern Kentucky University’s Truist Arena featuring Highlands and Campbell County in a boy-girl doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. with the girls game with the boys game to follow at 4 p.m. Then basketball fans in the area will get to see the No. 1 team in the state, St. Xavier out of Louisville take on Newport at 6 p.m.
The No. 2 boys team in the state will also be in town this weekend as Great Crossing travels to Park Hills to take on Covington Catholic on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. The two met earlier this year, a 71-60 Warhawks victory in the championship game of the Billy Hicks Classic on Dec. 14.
