A student from Concord and a teacher from Cox Mill are the most recent recipients of the Dr. Chris Lowder Scholarships and the deadline for 2025 is approaching.
The Dr. Chris Lowder Scholarships Fund was established in 2021 by friends and colleagues to honor the retired Superintendent of Cabarrus County Schools, having served as Superintendent from 2015-2021. Two scholarships are awarded each year, one to a graduating Cabarrus County Schools senior, and one to a CCS staff member pursuing a degree or certificate program to enhance their role in CCS.
This is the fifth year of awarding the two $1000 scholarships. A featured requirement of the application process is for the applicant to write an essay on an educator who has impacted their life. The application with additional instructions is located at https://tinyurl.com/LowderScholarship.
“We are excited to share the 2024 award winners,” according to the scholarship committee in a press release.
Concord High School senior Bronwen R. Bates received the student scholarship. Bronwen recognized his teacher, Mrs. Jennifer Ward in his essay on an educator who had positively influenced him. Bronwen states that “Mrs. Ward has given me the belief in myself. There is no doubt that she is one of the biggest influences in my decision to further my education, and I have no doubt now that I will do great things because of her.”

James T. McGhee, from Cox Mill High School received the staff scholarship. McGhee is a Business teacher at CMHS and is pursuing a Masters degree in Secondary Education. Mr. McGhee’s essay honored his 8th grade Math teacher Mrs. Elliott. McGhee shared “She would teach us math but also found ways to incorporate basic life lessons that would help us succeed in life! She is a major part of the reason that I chose to be a teacher today.”

The Scholarship Committee looks forward to continuing to honor students and staff who pursue excellence with integrity and compassion, and who are goal-driven in their educational pursuits.
