Thirty-seven high school seniors in Louisiana have captured scholarships so far as part of the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.
These include winners announced Wednesday as well as five who were announced April 24.
More winners will be announced on June 5 and July 15. By the conclusion of this year’s competition, 6,870 students will have won National Merit Scholarships worth more than $26 million. They were selected from a larger group of 15,000 finalists and 16,000 semifinalists.
The New Orleans area, including the northshore, has 18 scholarship winners so far, while the Baton Rouge area has 10. Shreveport is next with three winners. Of the six remaining winners, three are from south Louisiana and three are from north Louisiana.
The scholarships announced Wednesday are a flat amount of $2,500 each and are being financed by the organizers of the National Merit scholarship program. The five scholarships announced April 24 are funded by corporations, and their value ranges from $1,000 to $10,000 a year.
The high school with the most seniors receiving National Merit scholarships so far is Baton Rouge Magnet High in Baton Rouge with six. No other high school in the state had more than two scholarship recipients.
