The Municipal Retirees Organization Ontario (MROO) has announced that a local student has been selected to receive a $3,000 from the organization.
Hannah Gilbert, a Wilfrid Laurier University student from Bayfield who is studying for a bachelor of arts degree in human rights, is one of five students selected in MROO’s Zone 2 to receive a scholarship, with other students hailing from Formosa, London and Simcoe.
This year’s annual scholarship program awarded $120,000 in scholarships to students across Ontario.
According to a press release from MROO, the organization’s scholarship program selects students who are family members of current MROO members and supports their post-secondary studies. Scholarships are awarded in each of the organization’s 10 zones.
Recipients are determined based on the number of applicants and specific eligibility criteria, including the student’s leadership skills, volunteer experience and commitment to making a difference in their communities.
Zone 2 director Dave Posliff explained the importance of the organization’s student scholarship program.
“Now in its 19th year, the MROO scholarship program is an integral part of MROO’s mandate to give back to our members and communities across Ontario,” he said. “We are delighted to support these students and their families. Congratulations to all five students in Zone 2 who were awarded MROO scholarships this year.”
