Each year, Bee Line Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), awards three scholarships to local students. Recipients for two of these scholarships are chosen through the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation (EWVCF), and the third is selected by the chapter itself.
The winner of the Emily C. Cooper Jefferson County ROTC Scholarship is Justin Gottlieb, who attends Columbia University in New York City. He is a 2023 graduate of Jefferson High School, where he excelled both academically and athletically. Gottlieb is a member of Columbia’s track and field team and is pursuing a degree in Data Science. He admits that the transition from life in small-town West Virginia to living in New York “has been a complete culture shock.” Nonetheless, he says that exploring new places and meeting people from diverse backgrounds has been an “extraordinary” learning experience. In addition to his other activities, Gottlieb works with new students to help ease their transitions.
Olivia Jenkins is the recipient of the Emily C. Cooper Bee Line Chapter NSDAR Scholarship. This fall, she will begin her second year studying Public Health at Towson University in Maryland. Like Gottlieb, Jenkins is a 2023 graduate of Jefferson High, where she was an honor roll student. At Towson, she is active with Students Achieve Goals through Education (SAGE) and Students for Public Health. She also works in the office of Towson’s Student Success Program. Jenkins spent the spring semester studying abroad in Alicante, Spain. That experience allowed her to strengthen her minor field of study by immersing herself into the Spanish language and culture. In the coming year, she plans to become a mentor for the SAGE Program by helping incoming freshmen to acclimate successfully into their new surroundings.
Finally, Taylor Decker was selected to receive the Frances Davenport Packette Todd Scholarship. She is the daughter of Kristi Decker and is a 2024 graduate of Washington High School in Charles Town. An honor roll student and a member of the softball team, she was also an active volunteer working with young children. In that role, she supported programs both at her church and in elementary classrooms. Decker plans to pursue a degree in Elementary Education at Fairmont State University. She already has a head start through coursework she completed at Shepherd University and Blue Ridge Technical and Community College as part of the West Virginia Department of Education’s Grow Your Own Program, which promotes teacher training.
The two Emily C. Cooper scholarships are funded through a process established with the EWVCF by a former Bee Line regent. The Frances Davenport Packette Todd Scholarship is funded through an endowment created by a charter member of the chapter. Bee Line Daughters wish to congratulate all three scholarship recipients. Their hard work and dedication to their educational goals and to their larger communities serve as inspirational examples to others.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is a patriotic organization devoted to service, historic preservation, and education.
