BELTON, Texas (FOX 44) — Students in Belton High School’s construction program spent their Halloween morning building brick walls in an attempt to win one of three scholarships.
The students got hands-on training from masonry professionals on Thursday, and teams of two laid down brick-by-brick on Friday in order to make the best wall possible. Michael Carrillo is the instructor for the construction crews at Belton High, and says the competition is one of many ways that they try to implement career skills into the classroom.
“We are seeing a lot of growth and growth in our area. And industry has come to us and like have been asking like, hey, we are needy. We are having trouble hiring skilled labor. So, they come to us in our focus is on competency based and sort of certifying them and in skilled trades,” said Carrillo.
Probably the most skilled masonry student in the class didn’t even compete on Friday. He had his eyes set on a bigger prize than a scholarship. Bryson Necessary won silver at the National SkillsUSA Construction competition last year, and now he’s training for the next competition. Necessary is in his senior year, and this is his last chance at gold.
“Nationals was really fun. It was really challenging and retiring, but we were a little disappointed in second place. So, this year we got another chance and a good team to go try to again and try to win it,” said Necessary.
Necessary learned from the professional masons at the competition and says their experience has him ready for this year’s national competition.
