BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – A scholarship concert was held Sunday in honor of 16-year-old Yasmine Wright who was shot and killed while riding in a car with her mother on their way home in January 2022.
To honor her daughter’s memory, Janice Wright organized the inaugural “Watch Me Soar” scholarship concert at Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church. The event aims to raise funds for scholarships benefiting Wenonah High School band seniors.
Reflecting on Yasmine’s compassionate nature, Janice shared:
“I adopted her brother also, and she treated him like he was her child. When we were dropping him off to daycare, she would grab her purse and say, ‘I’ve got to be professional when I take him in there.’ She was just a caring person.”
Since Yasmine’s passing, two $500 scholarships have been awarded annually to Wenonah High School band seniors, ensuring her legacy endures.
Janice Wright also hopes Yasmine’s legacy inspires a deeper connection to faith:
“I think this world would be a better place if parents took the time and introduced their children to Jesus Christ because he’s the reason we live. And I believe once we get that straight, we won’t have as much killing and stuff, because you’ll learn to care about yourself. And once you care about yourself, you’re not going to want to hurt nobody.”
The Birmingham Police Department continues to investigate Yasmine’s case.
