The window of opportunity for Birmingham City Schools juniors and seniors to apply for a “transformational” program is closing fast.
The application deadline for “Birmingham Promise,” a scholarship that provides up to four years of tuition support at any public college or university in the state, is set for May 1.
There is no grade requirement; students must simply complete the application process and fill out a FAFSA form to apply.

“Whether they’re about to leave high school or entering their senior year, Birmingham’s students have an opportunity to lay a foundation for the future of their dreams,” said Samantha Williams, executive director of Birmingham Promise. “We encourage every student to at least complete the applications to make sure they have the option of benefiting from Birmingham Promise programs.”
The scholarship program doesn’t just benefit students seeking four-year degrees; those looking at community college associate or certificate programs are also encouraged to apply.
“We have Birmingham Promise scholars who have received welding certificates, who are working to become veterinary technicians, as well as those who are pursuing careers in medicine, finance and social work,” Williams said. “Our message to students is that no matter what your goals are, Birmingham Promise will try to help you achieve them.”

May 1 is also the last day that juniors at Birmingham City Schools can apply for the Birmingham Promise internship, a program allowing seniors to gain job experience and workplace skills while earning $15 an hour.
“The internships are often described by students as transformational,” Williams said. “These experiences are a great way for young people to explore possible careers, and they pave the way for professional success down the road. We encourage every eligible student to pursue these opportunities.”
Applications for the scholarship fund have been sent out to all graduating seniors. Those needing help can email scholarships@birminghampromise.org or call 205-843-5967.
