Area residents came by the hundreds to the Emporia Senior Center to enjoy the Sertoma Club’s annual fundraising breakfast.
It’s an undertaking months in the making, according to Club President Vicki Brooks.
Besides the in-person traffic, Brooks says sponsorships are increasingly important to the event. She also says club members find familiar roles and fill those at the breakfast.
Proceeds benefit scholarships, whether for nursing programs at Emporia State University and Flint Hills Technical College or the ESU general scholarship fund. Brooks says there is an immediate and longlasting benefit for those scholarship dollars.
The club offered biscuits and gravy, Fanestil sausage, eggs from Spangles and drinks. Early indications are nearly $9,000 was raised.
Besides offering scholarships, the club operates the miniature train at Soden’s Grove, which will be active for the David Traylor Zoo’s Boo in the Zoo event on Halloween. It also posts American flags on national holidays and ESU flags for football games and other major university events.
