Honoring the legacy of longtime Bland County Messenger and Wytheville Enterprise sports writer Jerry Scott, the Bland County High School Athletic Department recently presented two scholarships in his memory.
Seniors Ethan Walker and Keri Potter each received $250 during the school’s senior awards night on May 20.
“This scholarship celebrates Jerry’s enduring impact by supporting students who embody his commitment to community and what it means to be a multisport athlete,” said Kevin Pauley, who awarded the scholarships.
Scott, who died on Nov. 1, 2024, following a battle with cancer, spent nearly 40 years writing about Bland County athletics.
“While fighting cancer he showed his dedication to our athletes by covering their achievements on the fields,” Pauley said.
Talking about Scott’s legacy, one student wrote: “He did so much to give us recognition and congratulations on our hard work. He deserves the same in return and I hope to see his impact live on for years to come.”
