Bread of Life scholarship applicants were required to submit a detailed application form, along with their grades transcript and a reference letter from their school, and write a short essay about themselves, their accomplishments, community service, future plans, etc.
The Bread of Life Board said in a release they were particularly impressed with this year’s applicants and the many achievements they detailed in their application paperwork.
These scholarships have been awarded annually since 1990 in memory of Robert “Bob” Storck (1915-1987).
Storck was owner and CEO of the former Storck Baking Company on 19th Street in Parkersburg. He was a well-known Parkersburg businessman and civic leader and believed in helping people of all walks of life to better themselves and to join the workforce of America. He gave men and women of all ages and races the opportunity to learn skills and to gain employment to care for their families, the release said.
Due to his World War II experiences of flying wounded soldiers home from the Pacific and seeing their sacrifices, he endeavored to hire and train the handicapped. Whenever possible he desired to benefit others and better the conditions in which they lived and worked, the release said.
Storck loved Parkersburg and the United States of America and gave of himself to make it a better place. He believed this to be the land of opportunity, as his father, an immigrant, also had loved this land and particularly the Mid-Ohio Valley, the release said. He and his father both believed in working and excelling to the best of one’s ability at whatever a person pursued.
