The second annual Breakfast of Champions will give out a total of $18,000 in scholarships to 10 Poway Unified high school student-athletes.
A limited number of seats remain for the event, from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 20 at San Diego Oasis’ Rancho Bernardo center, 17170 Bernardo Center Drive. Around 200 people are expected to attend.

The Rancho Bernardo-based Kiwanis club started Breakfast of Champions last year as a way to honor seniors at Poway Unified School District who not only excel in the classroom, but on the playing field by being good role models and leaders for their fellow teammates. They must also be involved in their community.
“I have now had the opportunity to be involved with the interviews of 20 young men and women (over the past two years) who are focused on their academics … service to community and schools,” said event co-chairman Reed Reichert. “These people are extraordinary and have exceeded my expectations.”
Individual seats for the event are $25 and corporate sponsorship tables range from $1,000 to $5,000, Reichert said.
“We are so fortunate that we had a number of people step up … but we need $26,000 and are not as close as we’d like to be,” he said.
Of the $26,000 to put on the event, $18,000 will be distributed at the breakfast in the form of college scholarships to the students, he said.
Organized by the Kiwanis Club of Los Rancheros, the event will recognize one male and one female with a $5,000 college scholarship, with the other eight nominees each being awarded $1,000 scholarships.
The students were all nominated by their schools’ athletic departments. The top scholarship winners are determined following an interview with the Kiwanians.
This year’s honorees are:
Del Norte High – Trey Coleman, a member of the football and soccer teams with a 3.8 GPA; and Ella Echsner, a member of the track and field, cross country and soccer teams with a 4.1 GPA.
Mt. Carmel High – Jacob Nguyen, a member of the soccer team with a 4.36 GPA; and Amber Timmer, a member of the golf team with a 4.0 GPA.
Poway High – William “Max” Bayer, a member of the water polo and swim teams with a 4.4 GPA; and Jasmine Nguyen, a member of the lacrosse team with a 4.0 GPA.
Rancho Bernardo High – Ryan Beach, a member of the football and lacrosse teams with a 4.1 GPA; and Emily Entwistle, a member of the volleyball team with a 4.2 GPA.
Westview High – Jaden Nisperos, a member of the soccer team with a 4.2 GPA; and Kate Tripiano, a member of the water polo and swim teams with a 3.95 GPA.
Academically, the honorees are “on the same playing field” so the scholarship committee is focused on their community service on and off campus, Reichert said.
“In most cases they are in multiple organizations and projects that are quite impressive when you get to sit and talk to them,” he said.
The keynote speaker at Breakfast of Champions will be Brett Tomko, a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for several teams from 1997 to 2011, including twice with the San Diego Padres. He is now a baseball coach at Poway High.
Another breakfast speaker will be San Diego police Sgt. Anthony Elliott, who is recovering from injuries after being shot in the head during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect in 4S Ranch. Also speaking will be Poway Unified School District Interim Superintendent Greg Mizel.
Reichert said the event will begin with musical entertainment by Poway High, this year’s host school.
He added that having Sgt. Elliott speaking to the breakfast attendees is “quite special.”
“It is really quite miraculous that he survived. he is really an amazing young man,” he said.
Due to the limited seating availability, Reichert said those who would like to attend should contact him soon to purchase seats or become a sponsor. For details, call Reichert at 858-705-8118 or email reedreichert@yahoo.com.
