The British High Commission in Ottawa has announced the three Canadian recipients of the Chevening Scholarship for 2025, which include Brendan Callan, an architectural designer and bio-researcher from Toronto, Ontario.
Chevening Scholarships are awarded to individuals from diverse backgrounds who demonstrate the commitment and skills necessary to drive positive change in their respective fields. Since its establishment in 1983, the Chevening program has empowered over 60,000 professionals to develop their expertise in the UK, before returning home with newfound knowledge that serves to benefit their communities. The program’s alumni include 21 current or former heads of state or government officials.
The UK Government’s global scholarships cover all necessary costs for scholars to pursue eligible master’s degrees at a UK university of their choice, while also granting access to exclusive academic, professional, and cultural experiences, along with an extensive alumni network of global leaders.
Canadian winner Brendan Callan is passionate about developing new architectural methods that use natural materials to bring nature and buildings closer together. He graduated from OCAD University with a degree in Environmental Design, where his work received the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA) Award for innovative approaches to sustainability. He has participated in international workshops and advised on projects using innovative natural materials. Callan is currently pursuing a Master of Architecture in Architectural Design at University College London.
Canada’s 2025 Chevening cohort also includes Cody Mackoway, an Alberta-based policy analyst and advocate for youth and Ukrainian communities, and Zeus Eden, a sustainability and policy strategist currently serving as press secretary to the Mayor of Toronto.
“Our 2025 Chevening scholars are shining examples of the passion Canadians bring to the table in their pursuit of solving the most pressing of challenges. Brendan, Cody and Zeus are ambitious, influential and committed to using their considerable skills and expertise to make the world a better place,” said Dave Prodger, United Kingdom’s Deputy High Commissioner to Canada. “Our prestigious Chevening Scholarship programme invites emerging leaders to build on their own diverse backgrounds at the UK’s world-class universities, bringing the skills and knowledge they gain back to serve their communities. We’re thrilled to recognise these three outstanding individuals and look forward to seeing where they go from here.”
The British High Commission will bid this year’s scholars goodbye and good luck with a farewell reception at Crichton Lodge, the British High Commissioner’s official residence in Ottawa, on August 21, 2025.
Aspiring scholars interested in the 2026 Chevening Scholarships can submit their applications here. The application window will remain open until October 7, 2025.

Groundwork is a three-part film and exhibition series exploring the conceptual development and field research of contemporary architects cultivating alternative modes of engagement with new project sites. Using documentary as a curatorial tool, the CCA will take a critical look at how designers across diverse geographies and contexts engage with their environments in preliminary phases of projects. In doing so, thinking processes, research, and stages of transformation will be highlighted as revelatory aspects of architectural work that help to deepen our understanding of new critical modes of practice and engagement. In light of the ecological crisis, the project questions how different architects situate themselves in relation to changing natural and disciplinary boundaries.
The exhibition is on from now until September 14, 2025.
