Bret Harte High School senior student-athlete Sophie Bouma received one of the top scholarships the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section offers.
On Monday, Bouma was announced as the female recipient of the Clarke Coover Award, a $1,500 scholarship in honor of former CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Commissioner Clarke Coover. This award is given for outstanding athletic performance, community service, and academic success. The male recipient is Los Banos’ Larry Borelli.
“Sophie is the all-around complete package,” Bret Harte volleyball coach Jacey Porovich said. “Her commitment to excellence, strong work ethic, and determination on the court extend to all aspects of her life. The same tenacity she brings to the court is present in the classroom and when she serves as an FFA officer within the ag community. Sophie is an example of ‘where there is a will, there is a way.’ Often, students feel they must focus only on academics, choose sports, or ag, but she has done it all and represented her community with pride. I am so proud of her and all she has, and will continue, to achieve.”
As a Bret Harte athlete, Bouma participated in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. She is a two-time Mother Lode League first-team volleyball member who helped lead the Bullfrogs to a CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V volleyball championship appearance in 2022. She finished her senior season with 173 kills, 14 assists, 186 serves received, 32 aces, 96 digs, and 33 blocks.

In three years as a varsity basketball player, Bouma reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Division V championship game twice and was a 2023 CIF State Division V champion. Early in her senior basketball season, Bouma suffered a torn ACL, a torn meniscus, along with heavy bruising on her MCL and kneecap, and missed the majority of the season. Despite this, she was named Bret Harte’s Character Award recipient after playing in only a handful of games before her season-ending injury.
In the classroom, Bouma, an AP scholar, has a GPA of 4.4 and ranks No. 2 in her class of 126. She has been named the Rotary Student of the Month and has won Academic Decathlon medals for economics, essay, science, interview, and speech. Bouma will attend Duke University, where she will major in chemistry and biology with the future goal of working in forensic science.
Bouma, along with the recipients of the A. Dale Lacky Student-Athlete Awards, will be recognized at the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section breakfast awards ceremony, set for 9 a.m. on April 30 at Hutchins Street Square in Lodi.
