Former Brandon Wheat Kings star recorded 15 points in eight January games for Alberta
Feb. 6, 2025 – Alberta Golden Bear forward Brett Hyland has officially announced his presence on the Canada West scene, as the rookie has been named the conference's Western Hockey League Grad of the Month for January after a breakout offensive month.
After leading the Brandon Wheat Kings in goals and points last season, the hometown Edmonton product has carried his offensive touch over to the university game. He tallied 15 points in eight January contests for the Golden Bears, notching four goals and 11 helpers while recording at least one point in each game he played during the month.
Hyland is currently tied for sixth in overall conference scoring with 30 points in 19 games. He also leads the conference in points per game with 1.58.
His two-way impact has provided a huge boost for a strong Golden Bears side currently battling for first place in the CW East Division with rival Saskatchewan. The Bears compiled a 6-3 record in January and are currently tied with the Huskies for first place.
Hyland's explosive January included five multi-point games and a +10 rating, highlighted by a three point performance in a 7-3 victory over Calgary on Jan. 10.
Hyland joined the Golden Bears this season after a successful WHL career with the Brandon Wheat Kings, where he accumulated 145 points over five seasons. He led the team in goals and points during his final year with the Wheat Kings, scoring 32 goals and 27 assists in 66 games during the 2023-24 season.
Hyland is a Business student who is utilizing his WHL Scholarship to attend the University of Alberta in his hometown of Edmonton, Alta. For each season played in the WHL, a player is awarded with a one-year post-secondary scholarship, which includes tuition, compulsory fees, and required textbooks.
In partnership with Canada West universities, numerous WHL Scholarship recipients each year are also awarded additional financial assistance from their university to receive Western Canada’s Premier Hockey Scholarship.
Since 1993, the WHL has awarded nearly 8,000 scholarships to graduate players. The WHL is the leading supplier of hockey scholarships in Western Canada and offers one of the most comprehensive scholarships in North America.
WHL Grad of the Month
The WHL Grad of the Month is a partnership between the WHL and Canada West. CW coaches vote to select the winner each month. All nominees must have played at least one full season in the WHL and be in good standing in Canada West.
