OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WLOX) – For eight years, the Celebrate Sisters Foundation has mentored more than a dozen young women.
Not only that, but it has awarded thousands of dollars to high school students with STEM-driven futures, like Layla Razo of Biloxi High School.
“For my family, this money helps a lot,” she said.
Razo has dreamed of going to college and says every dollar counts. Now, she’s on the path to continuing a legacy in mathematics.
“It’s something that my dad and my sister, who passed away recently, really liked, and I want to her dream,” she said.
She is one of three young women taking home $1,000.
The biggest award is going to Asia Martin of Ocean Springs High School. She’s receiving $4,000.
A co-founder of the non-profit, Ja’wanda Grant, says the scholarship is a testament to her and her sisters’ journey to college.
“Our goal is to help them network,” she said. “We have local women in STEM representing environmental sustainability. We also have women in medical imaging, so now they can have those conversations about possible careers.”
Former scholarship recipients came together to celebrate this year’s winners, sharing goals and what they have accomplished.
