Finn Brown of Charleston won the Elementary (Grades 1-4) division in the Brody Bates Youth Redfish Open at a $5,000 scholarship.
Finn Clark of Georgetown and Rhett Benford of Summerville won the Middle School (Grades 5-8) and a $5,000 scholarship at the Brody Bates Youth Redfish Open with two redfish weighing 8.27 pounds.

Thanks to the expansion into the Lowcountry by the Student Angler League Tournament Trail, the sixth annual Brody Bates Youth Redfish Open drew a record 22 teams. The student anglers from grades 1-12, earned $33,000 in scholarships at the tournament, fished out of Buck Hall in McClellanville, and a donation also was made to the Brody Bates Foundation that provides scholarships for youth who have lost a sibling.
Tournament winners were:
Elementary School (Grades 1-4): Finn Brown of Charleston with two fish at 5.67 pounds, $5,000; Harry Parnell of Charleston, one fish at 4.10 pounds, $3,000, plus Big Fish Award, $1,000; Russ Glover of Murrells Inlet with two fish at 2.99 pounds, $2,000.
Middle School (Grades 5-8): Finn Clark of Georgetown and Rhett Benford of Summerville, two fish at 8.27 pounds, $5,000; Ayden Rouhselang of Conway with two fish at 7.53 pounds, $3,000; Cole Steele of Winston-Salem, N.C., with two fish at 7.30 pounds, $2,000, and Big Fish Award, $1,000 for a 4.18-pound catch.
High School (Grades 9-12): Elliott Duckworth of James Island with two fish at 7.23 pounds, $5,000; Corbin Todd and Carsten Huggins of Conway, two fish at 6.87 pounds, $3,000; Callie Calhoun and Riley Jordan of Conway, two fish at 6.68 pounds, $2,000; Big Fish Award to Jacob Hardick of Hartsville, 4.10 pounds, $1,000.
The East Cooper CCA (Coastal Conservation Association) Chapter‘s Celebrating Conservation Banquet will be held from 6-10 p.m. May 15 at Omar Shrine Auditorium, located at 176 Patriots Point Rd., Mount Pleasant.

The South Carolina Outdoor Press Association (SCOPE) is partnering with the Hampton Wildlife Fund and South Carolina Wildlife magazine to sponsor the South Carolina Youth Outdoor Writing Competition. The competition is open to high school students in grades 9-12. The target audience will be entries from South Carolina but entries from any state are eligible for the competition.
Entries will be 300- to 500-words in length and topics include any outdoor subject that’s presented in a positive manner. One entry per contest. Entry forms are available at scoutdoorpress.com. Entries are being accepted through June 16, 2025.
First place is $500, second is $300 and third is $200. The entries will be published on the SCOPE website and first-place winner will be published in South Carolina Wildlife magazine.
