Brothers Burke and Gus Johnson, both incoming seniors, were recently awarded a scholarship after participating in the Texas Boys State program this summer at the University of Texas at Austin.
The opportunity, sponsored by American Legion Post 363, was part of the organization’s effort to send several local students to the prestigious Boys and Girls State programs. These week-long camps immerse students in mock government, leadership training, and civic engagement.
Burke Johnson said the program helped him overcome communication struggles and gain confidence in speaking with strangers.
“I learned how to win people over and just put myself out there,” he said.
Gus Johnson echoed the sentiment, saying the experience taught him to seize opportunities.
“It’s about getting out there, making the polls, and grabbing the chance when it comes,” he said.
Both brothers plan to pursue degrees at UT Austin after graduation, Burke leaning toward engineering and Gus considering a combination of engineering and business.
