The Central Arizona College Foundation has received a $50,000 donation from Cindy Schorr to establish the Joyce Amburgey Memorial Scholarship, designed to support Pinal County students pursuing higher education in the medical field.
Joyce Amburgey, the scholarship’s namesake, was raised in Middletown, Ohio. She left high school at 17 and dedicated much of her early life to raising four children and training Tennessee Walking horses. Later, at the age of 35, Amburgey entered the workforce, taking on roles as a bartender and in clerical positions. Realizing the value of education for career advancement, she earned her GED and pursued business and accounting courses at a community college. Her dedication led to positions as an inventory control supervisor and facilities manager.
The Joyce Amburgey Memorial Scholarship will begin awarding funds in fall 2025. Eligible applicants must be Pinal County residents or graduates of a Pinal County high school who plan to enter the medical field. All residents of San Tan Valley are eligible. Preference will be given to first-generation college students or those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Recipients will receive $1,000 per semester each academic year.
The Central Arizona College Foundation encourages community members to contribute to the scholarship fund. Donations can be made online at www.centralaz.edu/give, with all contributions helping to support additional scholarships for students in need.
The Joyce Amburgey Memorial Scholarship honors Amburgey’s journey and commitment to education while providing opportunities for future generations of students to succeed.
