CADILLAC — The Cadillac High School class of 1979 has established a new scholarship to help fellow graduates pursue higher education or skilled trades training.
The Viking Spirit Scholarship Fund, created by the class of 1979 and managed through the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, is designed to support Cadillac High School graduates in their pursuit of postsecondary education or skilled trades training. To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from Cadillac High School, maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5, and demonstrate financial need.
Barb Durant, a member of the Class of ’79 and one of five members of the scholarship committee, said the idea for the scholarship originated at the class’s 45th reunion last summer.
“Many of our classmates were on board with it, but five of us formed the committee. We got with (CACF Executive Director) Doreen (Lanc), and she helped us with the development,” Durant said. “It is a grassroots kind of thing.”
Other committee members include Kate Fornarotto, Brian Nyland, Cathy Stilwell and Kraig Husted.
According to a news release about the scholarship, qualities such as character, community service and leadership are important factors in the selection process. This year, Caleb Cramer will receive the $1,000 scholarship in recognition of his spirit of service and leadership. Cramer plans to study in the medical field at Wayne State University in Detroit.
Durant said the committee received 17 blind applications — meaning applicants’ identities were hidden during the review process — and was impressed by the caliber of students and the quality of their essays.
With the first scholarship awarded, the committee is now focused on fundraising and reaching its goal of having the scholarship endowed.
They plan to attend several events, including the upcoming Cadillac Festival of the Arts, to raise awareness and support. The hope is to award a $1,000 scholarship each year, but Durant said they would not be opposed to giving more, or awarding multiple scholarships, if fundraising allows.
Those interested in supporting future graduates by donating to the Viking Spirit Scholarship Fund may contact the Cadillac Area Community Foundation at (231) 775-9911 or by email at cacf@cadillacfoundation.org.
