Eight local high school students have been recognized for their academic and athletic achievements by the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame.
Every year, the hall of fame gives out $1,000 scholarships to a graduating student from each Cambridge high school.
This year's recipients were Jenna Charron (Southwood Secondary School), Cait Croft (Jacob Hespeler Secondary School), Grace Wijngaarden (Glenview Park Secondary School), Julia Papalia (Monsignor Doyle Catholic Secondary School), Lucio Dunlop (Galt Collegiate Institute), Dylan Benett (Preston High School), Carter Whissell (St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School) and Libby Spence (École Secondaire Catholique Père-René-De-Galinée).
Eligibility is dependent on being a positive school ambassador through academics and athletics, community contributions and leadership.
In addition to the $1,000, Croft and Wijngaarden also received $5,000 through the Bob Cunningham Scholarship.
Inducted into the hall of fame as a builder in the sport of softball in 2009, Cunningham began donating $2,000 to one student per year beginning in 2013. At the time of his death in 2022, he left a lifetime endowment that sees two student-athletes honoured with the $5,000 scholarship in his name.
"Bob Cunningham was a gifted coach who believed that in life you have to give back to your community," the hall of fame said in a social media post.
"He spent more than 30 years coaching minor league hockey and baseball in Cambridge but his lasting contribution to the athletic heritage of Cambridge is his gift to the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame that allows us to award $18,000 in scholarships annually to eight graduating secondary school students from Cambridge."
The scholarships were handed out at a ceremony at Blackshop Restaurant on June 18.
