Four engineering students in Canada are among the recipients of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers’ (ASHRAE’s) scholarships for the 2025-2026 academic year.
“Supporting the next generation of engineers is one of the most impactful ways ASHRAE can help build a more sustainable future,” says 2025-26 society president Bill McQuade. “These scholarships recognize academic excellence and a commitment to the advancement of the built environment.”
The US$12,500 ASHRAE Presidents Scholarship, awarded over two years, goes to Lona Le (pictured, left), a physics and sustainable energy engineering student at Simon Fraser University (SFU) in Vancouver. This scholarship recognizes a student enrolled in an undergraduate BSc. engineering curriculum in preparation a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) or refrigeration profession. Notably, Le completed an eight-month building performance internship with Edge Consultants last year.
The US$5,000 Lynn G. Bellenger Engineering Scholarship goes to Jasleen Sandhu, who is also studying sustainable energy engineering at SFU. This scholarship, named in memory of ASHRAE’s first female president, recognizes female undergraduate engineering students. Among her projects, Sandhu designed a dual-reactor carbon capture module for HVAC exhaust for the 2025 ASHRAE Applied Engineering Challenge (AEC).
The US$5,000 William Chapman Scholarship, named for the society’s president from 1976 to 1977, goes to Luna Marouf, a mechanical engineering student at Toronto’s York University. Her research has included “developing reverse osmosis (RO) membrane coatings to mitigate fouling and enhance water quality” and “designing air filtration systems using photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) with electrospun fibres.”
Finally, a US$3,000 Ottawa Valley Chapter Scholarship goes to Charles McEwen, an applied science, mathematics and engineering student at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont. This scholarship recognizes students within the National Capital Region (NCR). McEwen has assembled and designed components for water-filtration systems and studied how they could be deployed at a larger scale.
In total, ASHRAE has awarded 40 scholarships this year, totalling US$218,500. Applications are now being accepted for its 2026-27 scholarships; the deadline is Dec. 1.
