The Canadian Junior Angus Guiding Outstanding Angus Leaders (GOAL) Conference was held earlier this year in Kelowna, B.C. A total of $11,000 in prizes were awarded to five finalists in the Canadian Angus Foundation Legacy Scholarship program. As well, one lucky attendee was randomly selected to receive a $3,000 heifer voucher prize.

The Legacy Scholarship program recognizes overall academic achievement, leadership and community involvement, and industry knowledge. The top five applicants attend the GOAL conference for an interview and panel discussion and the scholarships are awarded during the conference. 
Lainie Muir, who hails from Manitoba, placed first and received a $5,000 scholarship. Muir is in the second year of a bachelor of science in agriculture program, majoring in soil science, at the University of Saskatchewan. She intends to pursue a career in research in agricultural soil health. 
Chase Bruynooghe placed second and received a $3,000 scholarship. Bruynooghe grew up on his family’s beef cattle operation, Spring Creek Ranch, at Outlook, Sask. He launched his own purebred Red Angus cattle operation, Wingello Cattle Co., in 2014. He is currently in his third year of an animal science degree at the University of Saskatchewan. When he completes his degree, Bruynooghe intends to pursue a career in agriculture. 
Placing third and receiving a $2,000 scholarship was Elle Groeneveld of Rocky View County, Alta. Since age 11, she’s owned a purebred Angus and Simmental operation, Elle Ranches. Groeneveld is in her final year of high school and is interested in a career in pharmacology and scientific research in the beef industry. 
Lilly Howell and Percy King each received $500 as runners-up in the competition. Howell, of Penhold, Alta., is in her final year of high school, and will attend the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary this fall. King, who hails from Antigonish, N.S., is also in his final year of high school and will be attending the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro this fall, to earn a diploma in technology and business management.
Selena Vala of Oliver, B.C,. won the $3,000 heifer voucher, via a draw. She will use the funds to buy an Angus female this year.

As National account manager for Canadian Cattlemen, I work with all major accounts including equipment manufacturers, ad agency’s and national breed associations. When I’m not busy working and promoting Canadian Cattlemen magazine, my family and I are running a purebred herd of Simmental cattle at Grandora, Sask.
