The Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship is awarded to Cape Henlopen High School seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence, are interested in and passionate about becoming a nursing healthcare provider, and have committed to attend a school of nursing or college program in nursing.
This year’s Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship Awards were presented to Abigail Fisher and Meredith King during the May 29 senior award program at Cape High.
The scholarship is named in memory of Darlene “Darby” Mowll, RN, who provided competent and compassionate care to thousands of patients over the course of a 30-year nursing career in newborn and maternal care, medical and surgical care, and home care. Mowll was one of 11 children in a big Irish family (the McLaughlins) who was only able to attend nursing school because of the financial assistance she received from the school and other benefactors.
Fisher is a member of the Health Occupation Students of America at Cape Henlopen High School, which has given her the opportunity to attend various healthcare educational events and gain an understanding of the different specialties in the healthcare field. HOSA is a global, student-led organization formed in 1976 to empower future healthcare professionals through education, collaboration and experience. Though her volunteer efforts, Fisher has cultivated an interest in nursing with the vision of caring for others and giving back to the community.
King has been accepted in the nursing program at the University of Delaware. From an early age, King knew she wanted to help people, and as her understanding of different careers evolved, she became certain that she wanted to be a healthcare professional. King has cultivated her interest in nursing through various volunteer activities and an internship at Beebe Healthcare where she was able to see first hand the important role that nurses have in helping improve the lives of the patients they serve.
The Darby Mowll, RN Nursing Scholarship team is proud to recognize these two outstanding individuals as they begin their preparation for a career in caring for others – nursing.
