In a recent monthly meeting of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Capt. Henry Whitener Chapter, an idea was presented by Betty Weyand to raise money to offer three local scholarships to three 2025 graduating seniors from Fredericktown, Marquand and Clearwater High Schools. The chapter membership covers Madison and Wayne Counties.
The idea was agreed upon by members and fundraising began. Derek Weyand, son of Charles and Betty Weyand, owns Weyand Knives, LLC. He agreed to donate one of his handcrafted knives for a raffle to raise funds.
The 10” Fighter Pattern knife was made from a City Lake, Osage Orange tree limb after the tree fell during the October 2021 tornado.
The drawing was held during the regular monthly meeting, Dec. 16, at the Madison County Ambulance District meeting room. Karen Kleinberg was the winner of the raffle. The knife was presented to her Dec. 18.
With the funds raised from this raffle, three scholarships of $500 each will be awarded in the spring of 2025. More details on applying for the scholarship can be obtained from the respective high school counselors.
