CaroMont Health Foundation today announced that Olivia Michael, a senior at Stuart W. Cramer High School, has been awarded the 2025 Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship. Following an extensive application and interview process, Michael was chosen to receive a four-year scholarship, worth up to $24,000 each academic year, for undergraduate studies in a healthcare-related field.
“The Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship represents our commitment to fostering exceptional healthcare talent in Gaston County,” said Mary Grace Bean, Director, CaroMont Health Foundation. “Olivia Michael distinguished herself not only through her remarkable academic record, but with her demonstrated compassion and earnest desire to serve others. We believe Olivia embodies the qualities that will make her an outstanding healthcare provider, and we’re proud to support her journey at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.”
Michael is an exemplary academic scholar with a commitment to healthcare studies, demonstrated through her leadership as President of the Health Occupations Students of America Chapter. Her compassionate service as a CaroMont Health volunteer in both the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and The Birthplace has provided valuable assistance to nursing staff while offering comfort to families during one of life’s most significant moments. Beyond her academic excellence and multiple scholastic awards, Michael balances her intellectual pursuits with remarkable athletic accomplishments, including championships in Big South AAA Women’s Tennis and standout performances in soccer. This dedication across multiple disciplines, combined with her active role in student government, showcases her exceptional drive and well-rounded character.
“This year’s selection process challenged our committee with an exceptional pool of candidates, each demonstrating remarkable potential and dedication to healthcare,” said Jay Nutter, Chair of the CaroMont Health Foundation Scholarships Advisory Board. “Olivia Michael captured our attention through her unique combination of intellectual curiosity and genuine empathy for patients. We believe her perspective and passion promise a bright future not only for her career, but for the patients whose lives she will touch.”
The Wayne F. Shovelin Scholarship is made possible by a generous donation from The W. Duke Kimbrell Family Foundation in honor of long-time CaroMont Health CEO, Wayne Shovelin. In addition to the up to $24,000 each year in support for tuition and fees Michael will receive, she will also have the opportunity to participate in three paid summer internships at CaroMont Health. These internships offer Shovelin Scholars the opportunity to learn from healthcare professionals within their specific interest areas and gain early exposure to the wide range of careers available in healthcare.
