Vicksburg, Miss.-Two Vicksburg natives have now been offered basketball scholarships to Mississippi Valley State University. Layla Carter and Janiah Caples both recently received the prestigious offer that was announced by their Head Coach.
Both Carter and Caples are currently playing at Mississippi Delta Community College under Head Coach Tangela Banks. The Lady Trojans currently have a 9-0 record where they defeated most of their competition by double digits. Last Tuesday, the Lady Trojans came out with a 70-64 win over Louisiana State University Eunice where Carter led with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and five assists while Caples scored 15 points and finished with six rebounds and three assists.
Carter is in her first year playing for Mississippi Delta CC. She spent her freshman season at Southern Arkansas University where she saw plenty of playing time. Her best performance was against Arkansas-Monticello where she scored 14 points. She also scored 11 points against Arlington Baptist.
Caples is also in her first season at Mississippi Delta CC. She spent her freshman year at Pearl River Community College. Her best game last year was against Enterprise State where she scored 17 points.
Two more members of the Lady Trojans’ basketball program also received a scholarship to Mississippi Valley State. Shamiah Sullivan and Lauren Nelson was announced as the third and fourth teammates who received the D1 offer.
Before MDCC, Caples and Carter were both teammates at Vicksburg High School where they played under Head Coach Troy Stewart. Both athletes helped the Missy Gators advance deep into the playoffs as Carter was named a Dandy Dozen and Caples was an All-District Player.
Neither player has committed to a school yet so their recruitment is still fully open at the time.
