KIMT News Three’s Evan Berg spoke with Catholic Charities of Southeast Minnesota about the progress of the new program.
ROCHESTER, Minn.-Catholic Charities of Southern Minnesota launched the latest round of applications for its Onward and Upward program on Nov. 1.
The program is currently accepting applications for around 6 more single parents who are pursuing a one to two year degree in nursing or dental hygiene in Rochester or Mankato for the Spring semester 2025.
According Sarah Vetter, director of child and family services for the non-profit, the program provides recipients with up to $5,000 per year and puts recipients in touch with a social worker who can assist them with their studies.
The assigned social worker checks in with the recipient every few weeks throughout their studies and 6 months after graduation to go over tips for time management strategies, studying and finding a job.
The non-profit has had 27 students graduate from colleges in southeast Minnesota using the program.
Vetter says for many recipients, the program doubles the earning potential of their families, with the average participant going from making 19 dollars an hour to 39 dollars an hour.
“That’s a huge difference from families that were living in poverty, struggling to make ends meet,” Vetter said.
Applications close on Nov. 30.
Vetter says applicants must be Pell grant eligible to apply.
Applications for the programs Fall of 2025 semester open on June 1.
