The Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association held its annual meeting on Thursday, March 7, at the Moulton Recreation Center. Members enjoyed a steak dinner provided by the Lawrence County Cattlemen.
During dinner, Keith Glover, President of the Alabama Cattlemen’s Association, provided an update on the state organization and how members could be more involved.
Mark Montgomery was chosen as the Billy C. Mitchell Cattleman of the Year. Mr. Montgomery, long time resident of the Wren community, got his first cow at 10 years old from his dad in the 60s and still owns and operates Montgomery Farms. For the past 16 years, Mark has been a top producer of Brangus females for the Town Creek Farms annual heifer’s sale.
Several students received a $1,000 scholarship after submitting an application and letter of recommendation.
The students were Emma Campbell, Wyatt Pace and Julie Jackson from Hatton High School; Mattie Rae Gillespie and Morgan Simpson from East Lawrence High School; Ava Martin, Ruby Shelton, Sutton Phillips, Caden Norwood, Gabe Hall and Jenna Johnson from Lawrence County High School.
A parent or grandparent of each of these students were required to be a member of the Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association for two years.
New officers were also elected at Thursday’s dinner. Wayne Pace will be serving as President; Bryan Hood as Vice-President, and Roger Dutton as Secretary/Treasurer.
The Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association would like to give a special thanks to its sponsors, Lawrence County FFA, East Lawrence FFA, and Hatton FFA for assisting in various aspects of the annual dinner.
