Campbell County High School students received more than $3 million in scholarships this year, according to Denna Grogan, a college access counselor with the Ayers Foundation at CCHS.
“We do assist with financial aid applications, filling out Tennessee Promise applications, but then we also host many events throughout the year for parents, families and those students to come to,” Grogan said. “And we’re all hands-on. We’re not just speaking. We’re jumping in and actually helping them to fulfill their goals. So a few statistics: we took over 100 students to six campuses across the state. We actually go with them and let them see what campus life is all about, and those are through MTSU, UT, Maryville, TCAT and others. We’ve had over 300 college applications completed from our Campbell County High School students, and that makes us really happy. And we completed and had over 1,000 individual meetings with students, and from that 1,000, it’s one-on-one, and we’re forming relationships.”
Grogan and Vannessa Overton, also a college access counselor with the Ayers Foundation at CCHS, spoke at the Campbell County Rotary Club meeting on June 4 at LaFollette Methodist Church.
“We love any chance to talk about the Ayers Foundation,” Overton said. “It’s a great program and one that we just have come to love. We started at Campbell County High School in August of this year, so we’ve just wrapped up with our first group of seniors. We started with two counselors, and through the generosity of the Ayers Foundation, we were able to add a third counselor.”
Tennessee College of Applied Technology President Debbie Petree introduced Grogan and Overton.
“We are in the process of hiring a student success coordinator, so we will have a staff of four,” Overton said. “We had almost 300 seniors this year, so it takes a lot of people because we start working with students in the eighth grade. We start planting those seeds about what they can do: dual enrollment, middle college, talking about careers.”
Also speaking at the meeting were Roane State Campbell County campus director Sharon Wilson and TCAT-Jacksboro counselor Camilla Gambrel.
“Senior Signing Day, that is the biggest event of the year,” Grogan said. “It is probably the most special ceremony I’ve seen, and we call it Senior Signing Day, rather than College Signing Day, and that’s because we help kids get to four-year colleges. We help children get to two-year colleges, technical colleges, military and the workforce. So part of that celebration is honoring each student who graduated high school, made a goal and is going to be a contributing citizen, and that, to me, is what we need to be doing.”
Grogan said the CCHS completion rate for financial aid applications is 95%, whereas the state completion rate is 65%.
