February 13Black Student Union Showcase: “The Power in Our Voice”
The average cost of tuition for a private college is over $43,000, and that price is steadily climbing. This rising cost disproportionately affects Black students, who according to Business Insider, “…are not only more likely to need to take on debt for school, graduates are also nearly five times as likely to default on their loans than their white peers.” Furthermore, Black students have about $7,400 more in student loan debts on average than their white counterparts. This is a part of the institutionalized racism in education and student loans that are barriers to higher education for Black students. Additionally, lower average family income and racial discrimination in the hiring process keep Black Americans at a disadvantage. All things considered, it is especially important that scholarships are available specifically for Black students to give all students equal access to higher education. In celebration of Black History Month, The Eagle’s Eye has compiled a list of scholarships that support Black students seeking higher education.
