LAWRENCE — Central Catholic High School senior and Lowell resident Mason Crowley, Class of 2026, was recently named a semifinalist by the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program.
CCHS Principal Andrew Murray presented Mason with a letter of acknowledgement for his academic accomplishments.
“The entire Central Catholic community is beyond proud of the academic success of Mason,” said Murray. “We are confident that he will move on to amazing accomplishments and make the CCHS legacy even stronger.”
According to NMSC, about 16,000 entrants were named semifinalists — the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The students were notified through their schools and provided scholarship application materials explaining requirements to advance in the competition for National Merit Scholarships to be offered in 2027.
In addition to academics, Mason — who wants to pursue a degree in engineering or computer science — participates in several activities including Track & Field, National Honor Society, Student Alumni Association, and Student Ambassador Association.
Mason also makes time to serve others: “My favorite service event is the Student Alumni Association Christmas Wrapping event, because it’s a great opportunity for us as students to get together and to give to those in need. I have also helped with the TeamWalk for Cancer Care in Lowell, the Haverhill Golf Tournament, the Special Olympics Field Games, and mentoring at Saint Mary’s Church.”
Mason believes all his CCHS teachers have been supportive, but he has specific faculty shout-outs including Sully Grella ’92 (math faculty/coach), Brian Griffin (science faculty), Eric Boucher ’04 (math faculty), Cameron Hebert ’17 (math faculty).
“I feel that what makes Central Catholic so special is definitely the sense of community. Everyone makes such a sincere effort to welcome and understand each other, and it makes a huge difference,” said Mason.
Mason’s sister Makayla Crowley ’29 and cousins Elena Zorbas ’27 and Luke Zorbas ’27 also attend CCHS.
