Bryce Kellogg, board president of the Central Oregon Avalanche Center, said the scholarship aims to remove financial barriers that prevent outdoor enthusiasts from accessing essential winter safety training.
“I think it’s a great way to pay forward their enthusiasm for the outdoors and to break down barriers to people accessing the outdoors in a safe way, especially during winter in the backcountry,” Kellogg said. “Sometimes cost can be a barrier to getting that education and training.”
The courses provide participants with crucial knowledge about recognizing avalanche warning signs and understanding potential risks in winter backcountry environments.
Applications for the scholarship are due by Dec. 1 and are open to all Central Oregon outdoor enthusiasts interested in winter backcountry safety education.
