Four local students have been awarded scholarships from the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce, selected from a pool of applicants for their academic achievement, community involvement and career focus.
The scholarship program, launched in 2010 with its first awards granted in 2011, has been supported in part by BOSCH since its inception. In 2016, the program began offering renewable scholarships to students who maintain academic eligibility.
This year’s $1,000 renewable scholarships were awarded to Emory Holness and Taniyah Rivers.
Holness, a graduate of Summerville High School, earned a 4.7 GPA. She participated in the chorus and attended both the Georgia and South Carolina All-State choruses. She also served as a Model United Nations delegate, volunteered at Summerville Medical Center’s emergency department, interned at Medical Legal Forensic Services and held a part-time job at Ye Ole Fashioned Ice Cream and Sandwich Café. Holness will attend the University of South Carolina to study pharmaceutical sciences.
Rivers graduated from Woodland High School with a 4.5 GPA. She was active in the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, Upward Bound Math and Science, FCCLA, H.Y.P.E. and the marching band as a clarinetist. Rivers completed several healthcare certifications while enrolled in the Health Science Program at Dorchester County Career and Technology Center. She plans to attend the University of South Carolina Upstate, where she will major in nursing.
Two $500 technical scholarships were also awarded.
Josephine Dixon, also from Woodland High, graduated with a 4.4 GPA. She participated in the marching band, jazz band, National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society. She plans to attend Trident Technical College to study animation.
Amber Odom, a graduate of Summerville High School, maintained a 4.0 GPA. A member of the school’s dance team, she worked with her father and coached gymnastics throughout her high school years. She also completed the Biomedical Career Path courses, earning her white coat. Odom plans to pursue an associate degree in health sciences.
Funding for the scholarships comes from various Chamber events and activities, including the 50/50 game at Business After Hours gatherings, the 100% Club, golf tournament games, backstage tour ticket sales and contributions from BOSCH.
“Thank you to our members whose generous support makes this possible,” according to a press release from the Chamber. “Your contributions help these students take one step closer to entering the workforce and making an impact.”
