The Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce honored area businesses and community leaders and awarded scholarships to three high school seniors at its recent awards banquet.
Small Business of the Year went to Blue Lake Cleaning, led by Nate Michell, a home services company that past Chamber board president Susan Parker said has become integral to the Chardon community.
“Known for its high-quality cleaning services, the business recently expanded with a new brick-and-mortar location in the heart of Chardon,” she said. “In 2024, Blue Lake Cleaning donated over $20,000 to local causes and organizations, showcasing its ongoing commitment to supporting the community.”
Ms. Parker said Mr. Mitchell’s leadership extends beyond his business as he fosters connections among local professionals and business owners.
“Through his ‘Off-Duty Entrepreneur’ initiative, Nate also helps first responders start side businesses, empowering them to build financial independence,” she said. “Blue Lake Cleaning’s dedication to its craft, community and local business development makes it an excellent candidate for the Small Business of the Year Award.”
D&S Automotive Collision and Restyling took home Big Business of the Year.
“Founded by Carmen Paterniti and now led by his son, CJ, this family-owned business has been a vital part of Northeast Ohio for over 47 years,” said Chamber board president Julia Dolsen. “With locations in Mentor, Chardon, Elyria, Kirtland and North Ridgeville, D&S has grown into one of the largest multi-shop, family-owned operations in Ohio.”
Ms. Dolsen said CJ Paterniti’s leadership reflects a commitment to both business excellence and community involvement, carrying on his father’s legacy. “Through initiatives like the annual Cruise-In benefiting UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital and active support of local schools and nonprofits, D&S demonstrates a dedication to giving back,” she said.
The chamber honored Geauga Fraternal Order of Eagles (FOE) Aerie 2261 as Organization of the Year for its contributions to the greater Chardon community.
“Through their commitment to community involvement, volunteer efforts and generous financial support, FOE has consistently made a positive impact on numerous local organizations,” Ms. Parker said. “Their dedication to ‘people helping people’ has strengthened the Chardon community and supported a wide range of important initiatives.”
She said FOE Aerie 2261 has supported organizations like the Geauga Veterans Food Pantry, Hearts and Hands of CASA Geauga County, the Chardon Schools Foundation and others.
“Their contributions have touched countless lives, making a lasting difference in the community,” she said. “From assisting local schools and fire departments to supporting families and individuals in need, FOE’s impact is significant, making them a deserving candidate for the Organization of the Year honor.”
The chamber recognized Susan Parker, owner of Artemis Property Ventures and realtor with HomeSmart Real Estate Momentum, as its Businessperson of the Year. Ms. Dolsen called her a driving force behind both local businesses and community organizations in Chardon and the county.
Ms. Dolsen said Ms. Parker’s dedication to the area is shown in her active leadership and support of many organizations, including the Chardon Rotary, Geauga National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), Court Appointed Special Advocates for Kids of Geauga County (CASA), the Chamber and Operation Horses and Heroes.
“Susan plays an integral role in the local business landscape, helping to shape the community’s growth and success,” Ms. Dolsen said. “Susan’s contributions go beyond her professional work – she is a passionate advocate for local businesses and organizations, consistently promoting Chardon wherever she goes.
“She serves as an ambassador for new businesses, always eager to support and help them thrive,” Ms. Dolsen went on. “In addition to her business and volunteer efforts, Susan also rescues Rottweilers and runs a working hobby farm, demonstrating her commitment to both community welfare and sustainable living. Susan’s tireless dedication to supporting businesses and organizations makes her an invaluable asset to our community, and we are honored to celebrate her.”
The chamber honored Joyce Perrico, Chardon Eats’ chairperson, with the Maple Leaf Community Impact Award for her contributions to Chardon.
“Since moving to the area in 1998, Joyce has been deeply involved in the community, volunteering for countless events in the Chardon school system and supporting local sports fundraisers,” Ms. Parker said. “However, her most notable achievement came in 2020 when she founded Chardon Restaurant Week to encourage people to support local dining establishments.”
Ms. Perrico has grown the initiative to include Chardon Pizza Week, in January, and Sweet September.
“Joyce’s dedication to supporting and promoting local businesses has made a lasting impact on the Chardon community,” Ms. Parker continued. “Through her hard work and vision, she created Chardon Eats, an umbrella organization for these events that continues to thrive with the help of volunteers. Joyce’s drive and love for Chardon have been the driving forces behind these successful initiatives, and she continues to inspire positive change in our community. With even more ideas up her sleeve to enhance our beautiful town, stay tuned – there’s more to come! We are grateful for her dedication and look forward to the future she is helping to build.”
The chamber awarded three high school seniors from the Chardon Local School District, Iker Amaro, Ella Henderson and Dane Schinness, with $1,500 scholarships.
“Thanks to the generous support of our members and participants in the 50/50 raffles, the Chardon Area Chamber of Commerce will award three $1,500 scholarships to deserving graduating seniors from Chardon High School,” said board president Julia Dolsen. “This year, we received 18 outstanding applications, and after careful review and interviews with six finalists, three students stood out for their exceptional achievements.”
The three students exemplify the dedication, civic duty and drive that set Chardon High School apart, Ms. Dolsen said.
“Their academic accomplishments and contributions to the community are truly inspiring and deserve to be celebrated,” she said. “We congratulate Iker, Ella and Dane on this well-deserved honor and look forward to supporting them as they continue their educational journeys.”
