The Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Scholarship Duck Calling Contest, a cherished event in Stuttgart’s annual Wings Over the Prairie Festival, is making changes to broaden its reach and impact. The contest, named in honor of Chick and Sophie Major, offers scholarships to young duck callers, helping them pursue higher education.
Charlie Holt, a committee member, shared the history of the event, which began in 1975 to honor Chick Major, a legendary duck call maker. Initially open only to high school seniors, the competition now welcomes participants aged 16 to 20. This change aims to increase participation and provide more students with the opportunity to win scholarships, with $5,000 awarded to the first-place winner. Funds for younger participants will be held until they enter college.
The contest is set for Saturday at noon, a departure from its traditional Friday scheduling. Interested participants can register at the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce by presenting a valid ID to verify their age. Unlike previous years, a high school transcript is no longer required.
Holt emphasized the importance of the event, not only for competitors but also for the community. “This is a huge event for Stuttgart,” he said, noting its role in fostering tradition and supporting education. He also highlighted the excellent panel of judges, many of whom are seasoned duck callers.
The scholarship contest is one of several events during the festival, which concludes Saturday afternoon with the World’s Championship Duck Calling Contest. For more information, participants and spectators can contact the Stuttgart Chamber of Commerce at (870) 673-1602 or visit stuttgartduckfest.com/scholarship-duck-calling-contest.
With the opening weekend of duck hunting season coinciding with the festival, Holt expressed optimism for a strong turnout, despite uncertain conditions following recent droughts. “We’ve had some rain, but you won’t really know what the season holds until you’re out there,” he remarked.
For aspiring duck callers, the Chick and Sophie Major Memorial Scholarship Duck Calling Contest offers not only a chance to showcase their skills but also a pathway to higher education, a fitting tribute to the legacy of its namesakes.
