NEW ALBANY — At Western Kentucky University, students who apply to the school and have at least a 3.8 unweighted high school GPA and a composite 30 ACT qualify for the Cherry Presidential Scholarship.
This is the most prestigious scholarship at WKU that only 15 students were awarded this year. Faith Schultz, a senior at Christian Academy of Indiana, was one of the students chosen for this scholarship.
Recipients of this scholarship are given up to $16,000 each year to attend WKU. This will help Schultz cover all of her tuition for college.
After she put in her application for WKU, the university saw that she was eligible for the scholarship. Schultz was then contacted by the school and interviewed.
When she was done with the interviews, she had to wait to hear from the school for any updates on the scholarship.
“I didn’t believe it at first,” Schultz said. “We weren’t supposed to know (who the recipients were) until the end of this month. When I was reading it, I thought it was an update.”
As she read on in the message from WKU, Schultz saw that it said she was awarded the scholarship. When she first got the news, she was by herself and thanked God for this opportunity.
Once she told her parents, Schultz said that they were really happy for her and took her out to eat and celebrate this accomplishment.
Schultz had WKU as one of her top two choices for schools to go. The other one was Grace College in Northern Indiana. She wants to go to school to become a physical therapist and she will be majoring in exercise science at WKU.
“I always wanted to be in the medical field at some point and I used to want to be a (medical) doctor,” Schultz said. “Then I realized med school and everything wasn’t for me. But I still really wanted to do the medical field.”
She took an anatomy class a few years ago and fell in love with the bones and muscles of the body, Schultz added.
Not only did God help her with this accomplishment, Schultz said, her dedication and being a perfectionist helped her get this scholarship.
“I’m doing my best on every single assignment and I’m not letting anything slip,” Schultz said. “It’s hard work, but I really don’t think I could have done it without God.”
Outside of studies, Schultz is in Christian Academy’s Jazz band, on the tennis team, in the National Honors Society, the Spanish National Honors Society, the Tri-M Music Honor Society, helps with the math club in the elementary school and works part time with adults with disabilities.
For those preparing to start applying for scholarships, Schultz has this advice:
“Not to worry, it can be a very stressful time, your senior year,” she said. “There’s all these deadlines, but I think it’s important to be organized, be on time and just do your best.”
