IMPERIAL VALLEY – The Claddagh Club recently hosted its annual Scholarship Awards Dinner, where ten graduating seniors from Imperial Valley were awarded $1,000 scholarships. The event brought together club members, students, and their families, highlighting the Club’s commitment to supporting local youth.
The Claddagh Club of Imperial Valley is a non-profit organization that celebrates and promotes Irish culture to enrich the community. Its emblem, a Claddagh–depicted as two hands holding a heart topped with a crown–symbolizes love, friendship, and loyalty, and is proudly displayed on members’ polo shirts.
Each year, the Club raises funds through key events, including the Cattle Call Rodeo sales and St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas Dinners. These efforts allow them to donate to local charitable organizations and fund scholarships for graduating seniors throughout the Imperial Valley.
In addition to their scholarship program, the Club manages the Irish Gallery at Pioneer’s Museum and actively participates in the Museum’s annual Holiday Around the World Tour, where they offer traditional Irish food and live music performed by a local band.
Founded in 1997 by Rev. Tom Dermody, an Irish priest who served as the chaplain at Calipatria State Prison, the Claddagh Club has continued to thrive after his passing in 2017. Leadership is currently under President Kim Taylor, Vice President Jeff Hester, Secretary Janet Otter, and Treasurer Monica Kenagy. The Club holds meetings on the third Wednesday of every month at The Bud Club at Alford Distributing in Imperial, welcoming all interested individuals to join.
