CLARION, Pa. (EYT) – The National VFW Organization sponsors the “Voice of Democracy” competition yearly. Established in 1947, the “Voice of Democracy” audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay.
Nearly 25,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter each year to win their share of more than $1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college, or vocational/technical school.
Erika Meals–daughter of Sarah and Mike Meals–is this year’s winner from Clarion Post 2145. She is a sophomore at Clarion-Limestone High School.
Her entry was sent to the District 19 competition–which is comprised of 17 VFW posts in Pennsylvania–where it won first place, thus advancing to the PA State Competition.
On January 25, 2025, the VFW Department of PA banquet will be held during the Mid-Winter Conference in Gettysburg where the state winner will be announced from among the entries from the 25 VFW districts.
Prizes will be awarded to all 25 district winners. The winners and their families will be treated royally while in Gettysburg and will also be given a tour of the historic sites of the area.
