POTSDAM — Gracie Elliott, a junior in the Honors Program and a Chemical Engineering major and literature minor, has been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship.
Elliott is among 1,600 American undergraduate students selected from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico during the fall 2024 cycle.
Elliott will study at Denmark Technical University (DTU) during the upcoming Spring 2025 semester. At DTU, Elliott will engage in rigorous coursework that complements her chemical engineering degree and supports her career aspirations.
“I have been aware of the scholarship since the summer after my freshman year, and once I heard about it, I knew I had to apply,” said Elliott. “I’ve always wanted to study abroad, so I connected with Clarkson’s Study Abroad Office early in my sophomore year to determine that DTU would be the best fit for my degree requirements and personal goals. I also worked closely with my advisor to ensure my courses would transfer back to Clarkson, keeping me on track for graduation.”
Elliott exemplifies the interdisciplinary excellence that defines Clarkson University students. In addition to her rigorous coursework in chemical engineering, she is pursuing an ambitious Honors capstone project. Her capstone explores memoirs about contemporary poverty in America, examining how narrative techniques in memoirs shape public perceptions and influence policy discourse. Through this project, Elliott critiques the biases inherent in personal storytelling. Her capstone demonstrates her ability to navigate complex ideas across disciplines—from the technical rigor of engineering to the critical analysis of literature and social narratives.
Elliott’s success reflects the strong foundation provided by Clarkson University’s Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, which is renowned for its research excellence, hands-on learning, and preparation of students for impactful careers. The department helped Elliott plan her study abroad experience from the outset. Elliott’s selection as a Gilman Scholar demonstrates how the department’s emphasis on academic rigor and a personalized approach empowers its students to achieve extraordinary goals.
The Clarkson International Center played a key role in supporting Elliott’s study abroad journey. As the hub for international activity at Clarkson, the Center fosters global engagement through partnerships with over 50 international universities, including DTU. It provides critical resources for students seeking study, research, and professional internship opportunities abroad.
Indeed, Chemical engineering undergraduates have participated in study abroad programs at top universities across Europe, Asia, and Australia, gaining valuable global perspectives. In return, the international center welcomes international students from partner institutions as far away as Sungkyunkwan University and the National University of Singapore.
Elliott’s academic success and leadership have also been bolstered by the Clarkson Honors Program, which offers a rigorous interdisciplinary education and access to competitive scholarships such as the Gilman. The program’s tailored advising and extensive opportunities empower students to achieve their personal and professional goals.
Additionally, Elliott is an active member of TRIO’s Student Support Services (SSS), which provides academic, career, and personal support to eligible students, including low-income, first-generation, and students with disabilities.
Elliott expressed her gratitude for the support she received during the application process.
“I would like to thank the Honors Program for helping me focus my application, and my family for their constant encouragement,” she said. “The Study Abroad Office and the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering were also instrumental in making this dream possible.”
Elliott’s achievement underscores Clarkson University’s commitment to preparing students for success in a globalized world through innovative academic programs, robust support systems, and interdisciplinary excellence.
Elliott is interested in pursuing a career in the food or sustainable energy industry. After returning from her study abroad program, she is lined up for an internship with Pepsi, where she will gain valuable industry experience.
